An echocardiography is an ultrasound procedure where the heart is seen on a screen. A device called a transducer is used to transmit high-pitched sound waves during an echo, much like the ultrasound machines that are used to see foetuses during pregnancy. These sounds then reverberate off the heart and produce "echoes," which together form a computer image based on how the sound waves move through the organ. A doctor examines these photographs as they show on a screen. An echocardiography is a minimally invasive test that can detect a variety of heart conditions and abnormalities. Several heart-related issues that can be harmful if untreated can be accurately identified using this test. If your child's primary care physician suspects issues with the heart's valves, chambers, or ability to pump blood, he or she might advise an echocardiogram. If a patient experiences unexplained breathlessness, an abnormal heartbeat, or other similar symptoms, an echo may also be performed.
