The heart muscle receives blood from the coronary arteries. The heart muscle needs oxygen-rich blood to operate, and oxygen-depleted blood must be sent away, just like with all other body components. Little branches of the coronary arteries, which run along the outside of the heart, carry blood to the heart muscle. When other less invasive types of diagnostic tests suggest the existence of one of these conditions, cardiac catheterization is carried out to further assess coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, congestive heart failure, and/or certain congenital (present at birth) heart conditions, such as atrial septal defect or ventricular septal defect.
